CYCU Department of Landscape Architecture – Spring 2024 Advanced Planning and Design (II) “In the Name of Board Games: Professor Yves Michelin on Landscape Dynamics Analysis”
Professor Yves Michelin delivered a lecture in the graduate program of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Chung Yuan Christian University, and conducted a workshop using a serious game to illustrate methods for analyzing dynamic changes in landscapes.
The contemporary concepts of “landscape” and the “landscape profession” have grown significantly in both richness and complexity compared to the past.
New perspectives on landscape incorporate notions of sustainability and daily life, moving beyond traditional concerns with beautification and decoration. They also emphasize the continuous interaction and perception between people and the environment, rather than viewing landscape as a static, fixed physical setting.
This evolving understanding highlights the importance of creating environments that balance meaning, function, and aesthetics. Consequently, the landscape profession — and landscape education — must go beyond its traditional domains of planning, design, and construction. It must place greater emphasis on landscape management, in order to address the highly complex and dynamic nature of today’s landscapes.
