Chung Yuan Christian University, Department of Landscape Architecture – Spring 2024 “People and Place” Lecture Series Terroir, Food, and Landscape: Professor Yves Michelin on Landscape within the Context of European Culture
Professor Yves Michelin delivered a lecture in the Jean Monnet Module course offered by the Department of Landscape Architecture at Chung Yuan Christian University. His presentation focused on the theme of terroir, using the tasting of cheese and wine as a lens to explore the relationship between European food culture and landscape.
Today, the concepts of “landscape” and “landscape profession” have evolved to become richer and more complex than in the past.
Contemporary perspectives on landscape now incorporate notions of sustainability and everyday life, moving beyond traditional emphases on beautification and decoration. Landscape is increasingly understood not as a static, fixed physical environment, but as one shaped through ongoing interaction and perception between people and their surroundings.
This evolving concept of landscape emphasizes a balance between meaning, function, and aesthetics in the creation of environments. Accordingly, the landscape profession — and landscape education — must build upon traditional foundations of planning, design, and construction, while further embracing the concept of landscape management. This shift is essential to address the inherent complexity and dynamic nature of contemporary landscapes.
