111-1 Landscape Architecture Design(III) – Design Ideas Inspired by Contextual Imagination

In the second year design course of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Chung Yuan University, it is important to be able to imagine people’s lives on the landscape, because landscape design is not only about designing the spatial form of the landscape environment or facilities, but also about the design of the living situation in the space, which must be considered together with the design thinking. In this semester’s Design Course Assignment #2, the integration of the play “Situation (human use)” and “Scene (physical environment)” is used to conceive of the landscape design, and by means of the play design, students can imagine the state of people at each time, scene, and situation. This project was conducted in cooperation with the Yilan County Institute of Arboriculture, using the Yang Shih-Fang Forest Park in Yilan City as a base to seek creative design ideas, and a group of design teachers (Chih-Rui Lin, Wen-Huei Peng, Wan-Jun Tang, Bai-Ching Gao, and Fu-Chiang Tsai), led by Guang-Yu Wang, conducted a workshop on the creative creation of park green space environments. The students were taught how to design scripts, scenarios, and split-screen scenes, and to use these methods to imagine people in their living environment.

In order to promote the creative creation of park green space environment, Yilan County took Yang Shih-Fang Forest Park as the research base and combined it with the sophomore design course of the Department of Landscape Architecture of Chung Yuan University to seek creative design ideas.

 

Introduction of Yang Shi Fang Forest Garden

Located on the West Road of the old city of Yilan City, the park covers an area of 0.37 hectares, with two buildings, a parking lot, landscaping, and a park trail, and is currently managed by the Shuyi Landscape Institute. The site was originally a Japanese-style dormitory area of the Yilan District Sales Office of the Taiwan Electric Power Company, and was also adjacent to the Bixia Temple, which was planned to be demolished at the time.

  • Contextual Design-

In the cool autumn season, Chun-Chiao meets her true love, Chi-Ming, in an ordinary afternoon, and they meet and fall in love. In the end, they go back to the forest where they first met and let their memories continue, making the forest a new place for people to relax on weekends.

  • Landscape Design Concept-

The front lawn of the tree garden is revitalized to solve the problem of being deserted and unused, and it is connected with the cafes and other cultural stores around the forest garden. The use of movable seating elements allows residents to stay and rest on normal work days. The second floor of the restaurant is used to interact with the market’s stage, forming a relationship that allows for communication up and down.

  • Contextual Design-

The forest is located in the city of Yilan, and the surrounding area is full of people’s footprints. The video is composed of four questions, mainly to explore the views of the people around or visiting the park, why they came here, and whether they have expectations of the park.

  • Landscape Design Concept-

People find the roads slippery and unpleasant to walk on, and there are many mosquitoes in the darkness, so we hope to improve the pavement and overgrown vegetation, and then use the original building to create a space to rest and stay.

  • Contextual Design-

However, after searching for information and visiting the local residents, we found that very few of the proud handicrafts from the early days are left now. In order to let these almost declining cultures be seen, we want to use sound to trigger memories to show the contrast between the present and the past of the iron street, and to create a playground where the protagonist remembers iron playing as a child, and where grandpa and his little friends played in the park.

  • Landscape Design Concept-

1.Recreation Area：

The original stone chair area was expanded to include the undulation of the flower garden, the staggering of the walls, and the use of slides to connect with the original play area down the hill.

2.Trail：

The walkway is built around the playground, improving the original narrow brick walkway and using the trees on both sides of the walkway to provide shade, so that users can have a good use of space and feel on it.

  • Contextual Design-

The story is about a family whose child grows up and returns to the forest garden. When he was young, his mother took him to the nearby star school, Koufu Elementary School. The story is brought back to the present, where the garden has been transformed into an exhibition hall for the promotion of local crafts.

  • Landscape Design Concept-

The original garden did not have elements for children to stay, so a slide and a climbing net were designed to match the unique original slope of the garden and make the slide more interesting. In addition, a craft area was created for residents to use. The original chairs and slope were modified, and tables of appropriate height were added to make it easier and more convenient for residents to use. The surrounding community is full of traditional craftsmen such as carpenters, blacksmiths, and bricklayers, etc. The transformation of Yang Shih-Fang Forest Park into a park of 100 crafts is a way for residents to become more involved and aware of local culture, while preserving the continuity of traditional crafts.

  • Contextual Design-

One day, Shufen learns about a second-hand antique market in the Yang Shi Fang Memorial Garden and invites her neighbor Ah Fa to go with her. In the market, she listened to the history of each booth, and learned more about the craftsmanship of Lancheng.

  • Landscape Design Concept-
