110-1 First-Year University Environmental Experience Integrated Landscape Architecture Design Course – “Designing for the Environment Learning Design in the Environment”
The training of geomorphology professionals does not only end in the classroom, but also in the environment. Through actual observation of behavior, environmental reading, interviewing users, and understanding environmental issues and problems, we are able to make geomorphology designs that are more relevant to the environment, rather than just imagining them. The Department of Landscape Architecture emphasizes the cultivation of keen observation of the environment, and any environmental factor can be extended for design purposes, including topography, vegetation, buildings, sunlight, water flow, etc., to construct a knowledge of environmental characteristics and conditions, while solving existing environmental problems. Through the relocation teaching in Hualin Experimental Forest, the students can better understand the use of natural textures in design:
●Ecosystem Cognitive Constructs
Hualin Experimental Forest, located in Xindian District, New Taipei City, at an altitude of 200-600 meters, is a natural classroom for teaching geomorphology. The course focuses on the scale of mountains, forests, rivers, and then back to the small environment where animals live. Students learn about the components of the environment at different scales and the relationship between different indicator organisms and the environment. Through this course, students deepen their observation and understanding of the natural environment, and make the consideration of landscape design more relevant to the local characteristics and environmental features.
●Landscape design integrated with the environment
While knowledge of the natural environment is important, human constructs beyond ecology also need to be considered. Through this course, students begin to train how to observe the characteristics of the environment, firstly, through nature observation, sketching, and photography, they start to record and mapping the environment, then they draw a mental map in groups to develop the ability of teamwork and division of labor, and multiple discussions open up different perspectives on the environment. After observation and analysis, we are able to accurately design for the environment, whether it is to enhance the advantages or improve the disadvantages of the environment, and after observation and analysis, we are able to construct logical design works with more evidence.
●Taken from the environment for hands-on work
“Designing for the Environment Learning Design in the Environment”, in the Hua Lin laboratory students learn how to use appropriate materials for construction without damaging nature, not only to discover the diversity of natural materials, but also to reduce the waste of resources by taking materials from the local area, which are not usually learned in the classroom.
